The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, ordered the arrest of two officers allegedly involved in the manhandling of a female hotel worker in Lagos. The directive came in response to a viral video showing the officers assaulting the worker.
The incident occurred on June 27 at Annex and Regional hotels in Lagos around 4 am, while guests were asleep. The video showed EFCC officials invading the hotels, breaking into rooms, and brutalizing a woman identified as the hotel manager. Gunshots were also heard as people scrambled for safety, causing panic among workers, guests, and nearby residents.
A social commentator, @pidomnigeria, posted the videos on X.com, describing the invasion and alleging that the EFCC operatives stole ATM cards, money, and phones from guests. The commentator also noted that some arrested individuals remained in EFCC custody despite the evidence.
In a statement, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed that the EFCC chairman had ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. The suspects arrested during the operation are still being profiled.
“The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the arrest of two officers of the commission allegedly involved in the manhandling of a female staff of Regional Hotel, Ojo, Lagos,” the statement read.
“The officers were sighted in a viral video assaulting the staff of the hotel in an early morning sting operation in Lagos. The operation yielded a sizable number of suspects who are still being profiled.
“The EFCC’s boss has also ordered detailed investigations of the operation carried out at the hotel and assured that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against any of the officers found to be culpable.
“Olukoyede assures the general public that the EFCC would continue to ply its job professionally and with profound respect for the rule of law.”
