The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly refuted allegations by the Niger Republic that Nigeria and other member states are colluding with France to destabilize the country. In a statement issued on Thursday, the regional body described the claims as baseless and reaffirmed its unwavering support for its member states.
The controversy began when Niger Republic’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, accused Nigeria and ECOWAS of collaborating with France to undermine Niger’s sovereignty. However, both the Nigerian government and ECOWAS dismissed the allegations as unfounded and lacking credible evidence.
In a statement released by Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the federal government categorically denied any involvement in actions aimed at destabilizing Niger.
“These claims exist solely in the realm of imagination,” Idris stated. “Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance, overt or covert, with France—or any other country—to destabilize Niger Republic.”
The minister emphasized Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to fostering peace and stability in West Africa, citing the country’s leadership role in regional security initiatives.
Echoing Nigeria’s position, ECOWAS issued a statement condemning the allegations and expressing solidarity with its member states.
“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) expresses deep concern over allegations being made against Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states,” the statement read. “The Commission stands firmly by Nigeria and ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism.”
ECOWAS highlighted Nigeria’s extensive contributions to regional peace and security, pointing to the successes of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which Nigeria leads. The MNJTF has been instrumental in combating terrorism and insurgency in the region, further demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to stability.
In its statement, ECOWAS urged all states in the region to prioritize dialogue and collaboration. The Commission stressed the need for evidence-based discussions and cautioned against unfounded accusations that could undermine regional unity.
“ECOWAS calls on all states in the region to promote dialogue and stability and refrain from making accusations that are not supported by any evidence,” the statement concluded.
This development underscores ECOWAS’s dedication to fostering unity and security within West Africa, as the organization works to address regional challenges collaboratively.
