DSS Defends Presence at Lagos Assembly

The Department of State Services (DSS) has defended the deployment of its operatives to the Lagos State House of Assembly, stating that the security presence followed an official request from the lawmakers.

The clarification comes amidst growing tension over the security takeover of the Assembly complex, including the sealing of offices belonging to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DSS dismissed claims that its operatives had stormed the Assembly, emphasizing that they were deployed based on a formal letter from the Assembly dated February 14, 2025. The letter, signed by the Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. A.T.B. Ottun, highlighted concerns about potential threats.

According to the DSS, the request stemmed from credible intelligence indicating a plan to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker of the House on February 18, 2025. The intelligence reportedly suggested that such an action could compromise the safety of the Assembly and its members.

An excerpt from the letter read:

“The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume office on the 18th of February, 2025, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members. In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, 16th February, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and observing strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice.”

The DSS reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring the public that its presence at the Assembly was solely to uphold security and prevent any possible disruption.
