Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has dismissed reports of a congress held in Calabar, clarifying that the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejected it and will announce a new date.
Speaking on Monday during the PDP State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at the party’s secretariat in Yenagoa, Diri emphasized the party’s dominance in Bayelsa politics, urging members to remain united and ignore divisive rumours.
“Our party is thriving in Bayelsa. We remain the party to beat. The PDP has never lost here. If you seek relevance, you should join the PDP,” Diri stated.
The governor assured that no zonal congress had taken place in the South-South, adding that the National Working Committee (NWC), in consultation with zonal leaders, would set a new date. He explained that the initially scheduled February 22 congress was postponed following a request by the four South-South governors, who deemed the date unsuitable.
Meanwhile, the people of Ogbia Local Government tendered an apology to Governor Diri and the PDP over the actions of suspended Zonal Legal Adviser, George Turnah. Ogbia Constituency 3 representative, Gabriel Ogbara, described Turnah’s conduct as regrettable, reaffirming Ogbia’s loyalty to the party.
The State Executive Council passed a vote of confidence in Governor Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, further solidifying their leadership. The motion was moved by Oforji Oboku and seconded by State Assembly Leader, Monday Obolo.
State PDP Chairman, Solomon Agwana, commended Diri’s administration for its developmental strides, emphasizing that the governor’s performance had strengthened the party’s position for future elections.
In attendance were prominent party figures, including the deputy governor, Ogbia Federal Constituency representative Mitema Obordor, former deputy governors Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (retd.) and Werinipre Seibarugu, PDP South-South Zonal Secretary Prof. Felix Omemu, as well as local government chairmen and other key stakeholders.
