Since Tuesday, June 20, 2023, rumors have been flying around about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to appoint Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, as the new acting EFCC Chairman.
The rumors, first emanating from social media, speculated that although there hasn’t been an official announcement, the Federal Government of Nigeria has replaced Abdulrasheed Bawa with Hakeem Odumosu.
A search reveals that Odumosu’s appointment as EFCC chairman was not announced by the Federal Government in an official announcement. The office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has been the conduit for all government appointments thus far. There was nothing like it for Odumosu.
Additionally, there was no mention of Odumosu’s appointment as the new head of the EFCC in any of the federal government’s social media accounts. The rumors spreading around have no connection to any statements or officials of the government.
It is a known fact that no retired officer has ever been appointed as an EFCC Chairman since the onset of that position.
Responding to the rumors, Odumosu said: “Good Morning everyone, I have been inundated with so many calls and messages between yesterday and today on a purported EFCC Appointment. I just want to use this opportunity to debunk this information and say it’s UNTRUE.
“This information must have emanated from mischief makers and should be disregarded,” Odumosu concluded.
