Despite Suspension, Fubara Vows Loyalty to Rivers People and Democratic Mandate

Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the oath of office and the people of the state, despite ongoing political turmoil and his temporary removal from office.

In a statement released to commemorate the anniversary of his swearing-in on May 29, 2023, Fubara described the moment as one of “sober reflection and renewed determination.” He expressed gratitude to Rivers residents for their continued support, which he said has strengthened his resolve to pursue unity, peace, and good governance.

“Today marks exactly two years since I took the oath of office as your 7th democratically elected Governor,” Fubara said. “Despite the turbulence, I have remained steadfast and focused, guided by the oath I took and the solemn promise I made to always put Rivers State first.”

Fubara, who assumed office after securing a decisive victory in the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election, noted that the journey so far has been “challenging but progressive and impactful.” He reiterated his promise to prioritize the interests of Rivers people and deliver the dividends of democracy, adding, “That commitment remains unshaken.”

He extended heartfelt appreciation to the people of the state for their contributions and sacrifices, describing their support as the backbone of his resilience amid the political crisis.

The political unrest in Rivers State stems from a deepening rift between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and former political ally. The crisis spiraled into a legislative standoff involving the state House of Assembly and posed a growing threat to security in the region.

In response, President Bola Tinubu intervened by suspending Fubara from office and imposing a six-month state of emergency, placing the state under the control of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Sole Administrator.

Efforts toward reconciliation appear to be underway. Fubara recently met with Wike in Abuja to initiate peace talks, a move the FCT Minister welcomed, publicly referring to Fubara as “his son” and signaling readiness for a peaceful resolution.

As political stakeholders await the outcome of ongoing negotiations, Fubara’s statement underscores his continued loyalty to his democratic mandate and his enduring connection with the people of Rivers State.
