Deputy Chief Whip, Adewunmi Onanuga (Ijaya), Passes Away at 59

The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, popularly known as Ijaya, has passed away at the age of 59 after a brief illness. The news of her death was confirmed on January 15, 2025, by the National Assembly’s spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi.

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North federal constituency in Ogun State. She was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, where she was appointed as the Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly. Throughout her career, Onanuga was a passionate advocate for women’s rights, serving as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, and was known for her leadership and dedication to social welfare.

Her sudden death comes after a period of absence from public life since October 2024. The National Assembly paid tribute to Onanuga’s tireless service, commending her intellect, humility, and commitment to her constituents.

The House expressed condolences to her family, associates, and the people of Ogun State, stating that her legacy of service will continue to inspire future generations.
