Following public outcry and widespread criticism, the Delta State College of Nursing Science has withdrawn the query letter issued to a student, Osatohemwen Edobor, over a viral video recorded during an event attended by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
The query, issued on March 27, 2025, had sparked backlash after Edobor posted a video showing nursing students at a health programme in Asaba rejecting a song eulogizing Mrs. Tinubu. During the event, which marked the distribution of 10,000 professional kits, the compere led a chant proclaiming, “Na awa mama be this; we no get another one,” but the students responded with, “Na your mama be this.”
The incident drew attention from several prominent activists, including Omoyele Sowore and lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who condemned the disciplinary action and demanded the query’s withdrawal.
In response to the public pressure, the college’s provost, Mrs. R. Evbödaghe, issued a letter dated March 28, 2025, announcing the withdrawal of the query. The letter noted that the directive to rescind the disciplinary measure came from the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme.
The letter further instructed Edobor to return the original query through the student affairs officer to the provost’s office, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.
The college’s decision to retract the query has been met with relief from many Nigerians who viewed the initial action as unjust and unnecessary.
