Delta Govt Moves to Tackle Herdsmen-Farmer Clashes, Orders Profiling of Cattle Breeders

In a decisive move to address growing tensions between farmers and herdsmen, the Delta State Government has unveiled a strategic plan to profile cattle breeders operating across the state.

Chief Jeffrey Azagba, Special Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Livestock and Inter-Ethnic Relations, disclosed this during a high-level meeting with the Delta State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Azagba described the initiative as a proactive step to curb the rising wave of violent clashes in rural communities, often linked to armed herders.

“It is alarming that some armed herdsmen are wreaking havoc in our communities,” Azagba said. “Profiling them will help us fish out criminal elements and protect law-abiding citizens. The governor is committed to peace and development, and no one will be allowed to sabotage that vision.”

He emphasized the importance of increased agricultural productivity in the state, stating that farmers must be able to work without fear of violence. He also urged the leadership of MACBAN to submit a full list of their members to aid the profiling process.

“Delta is an agrarian state. Anyone found aiding or abetting criminal activities should either relocate or be ready to face the full wrath of the law,” he added.

Responding on behalf of MACBAN, State Secretary Mustapha Suleiman commended the government’s consultative approach and pledged the association’s cooperation.

“We appreciate the initiative and will fully support the administration’s efforts to promote peace and security. Our members are ready to collaborate for the good of all,” Suleiman stated.

The development is part of broader efforts by the Oborevwori-led administration to promote harmony and boost food security across Delta State.
