Delta Governor’s Defection Sparks Outrage as Advocacy Group Brands Move a “Betrayal of Trust”

A political advocacy group, Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria, has condemned the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a betrayal of public trust and a blow to the party’s legacy in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Ejiro Moses labeled the governor’s decision as “political opportunism,” warning that it would not go unchallenged. He revealed that the group is preparing to mobilize against the governor’s anticipated re-election campaign, using the defection as a rallying point.

“This is not just a political move; it’s a breach of the trust that millions of Deltans placed in the PDP,” Moses said. “We view Governor Sheriff’s defection as a betrayal of the party’s ideals and of the voters who supported him under the PDP platform.”

Oborevwori’s defection is historic, marking the first time since the return of democratic governance in 1999 that a sitting Delta governor has left the PDP for another party. The move is poised to reshape the state’s political dynamics, with potential ripple effects across the South-South region.

Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria emphasized its loyalty to the PDP’s founding principles and accused Governor Oborevwori of “unprincipled abandonment” of the people’s mandate.

Political analysts predict that the governor’s defection will dominate political discourse in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, with opposition forces seeking to capitalize on growing public discontent.

The development has further exposed the fragility of party loyalty in Nigeria’s evolving democracy, where defections by key political figures continue to stir controversy and deepen party divisions.
