Embattled activist lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has been released from prison after fulfilling the conditions for his bail. The development was confirmed by activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that Farotimi was no longer in the custody of Ekiti State authorities and was on his way back to his home in Lagos.
Sowore’s post read: “I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti State and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues!”
Farotimi’s release follows a recent ruling by a Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti, which granted him bail in the sum of N30 million. The controversial lawyer had been arrested earlier in December for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Farotimi had been held at the correctional centre in Ado Ekiti, where he appeared before the court under heavy security. His release marks a temporary respite in the ongoing legal battle, as he prepares to face the charges against him.
