Activist lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has disclosed that he is still facing four civil suits in different states, filed by members of the Aare Afe Babalola law office, despite the withdrawal of criminal charges against him.
Farotimi made the revelation during an appearance on the Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday, after Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, announced the withdrawal of the defamation case following the intervention of traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife.
The legal battles stemmed from Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which Babalola claimed defamed him. Farotimi, however, maintained that his book was a well-researched critique of the Nigerian judicial system, not a personal attack.
Despite the withdrawal of criminal charges, Farotimi remains entangled in civil lawsuits and stressed that the real issue at stake is the broader failure of Nigeria’s legal system, rather than any personal vendetta.
He further criticized critics who dismissed his work without reading it, calling them intellectually lazy and insisting that Nigerians must confront uncomfortable truths for meaningful reform to take place.
