David Mark Urges Idoma Unity Against External Threats, Calls for Collective Defense of Homeland

Former Senate President, David Mark, has called on the sons and daughters of Idoma land to rise in unity and defend their ancestral territory against growing external threats. His call comes in the wake of recent violent attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands across communities in the region.

Speaking through his representative, Hon. Ojotu Ojema—member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on National Inland Waterways Authority—Mark delivered his message at the Idoma Nation Peace and Unity Symposium held on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the Ochidoma’s Palace in Otukpo.

He emphasized that only a united Idoma front can effectively resist aggressors allegedly targeting the land for unlawful acquisition.

“We must reach a point where an attack on Agatu is seen as an attack on Ado; an attack on Obi is seen as an attack on Ogbadibo; and an attack on Apa is seen as an attack on Ohimini. Only then can we effectively repel these land-grabbing invaders,” Mark declared.

In a passionate appeal for solidarity, he criticized the growing trend of disrespect directed at the Ochidoma’s traditional stool on social media, urging the people to emulate other ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, who hold their traditional institutions in high esteem.

Mark stressed the need for parents to educate their children on humility, unity, and respect for traditional leadership, describing such values as the bedrock of communal strength.

During the symposium, he moved a motion for a Vote of Confidence in the Ochidoma, His Royal Majesty, Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John. The motion was unanimously adopted by all in attendance, with thunderous voices affirming support for the monarch’s leadership.

He further proposed a motion for the unification of efforts, ideas, and resources to safeguard Idoma land. This second motion also received unanimous approval, marking a renewed commitment among the people to work together for peace, security, and territorial integrity.

The event served as a rallying point for the Idoma nation, underscoring the urgent need for collective action in the face of rising insecurity and external aggression.
