Dangote Refinery Achieves Global Milestone with Fuel Exports to Africa and Europe

0

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has begun exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian-owned facility. Diesel and jet fuel from the refinery are also gaining traction in international markets, with the latter being heavily exported to Europe.

This was disclosed by Dr. Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, during a recent visit by a Japanese business delegation led by Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo.

“In recent weeks, we’ve exported petrol to several African nations and expanded diesel and jet fuel exports globally. Our products are already establishing a strong international presence,” Dr. Edwin said.

He noted that the refinery exemplifies Africa’s potential to leverage its crude oil resources for refined product production, driving industrial growth, job creation, and economic prosperity.

The refinery, lauded as the world’s largest single-train refinery, represents the vision of Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote. Designed and constructed by Nigerians, the facility serves both local and international markets, with Dangote Industries Limited acting as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor.

“This refinery is a source of pride for Nigeria, showcasing what is possible when innovation, ambition, and local expertise come together. It’s not just a project—it’s a statement about Nigeria’s capabilities,” Dr. Edwin remarked.

During the tour, the delegation observed state-of-the-art Japanese equipment integrated into the refinery and its accompanying fertiliser plant. Edwin highlighted ongoing collaboration opportunities, stating that Dangote Industries consistently adopts advanced technology across its operations.

“Our cement plant laboratories are robot-managed, and we continuously seek cutting-edge innovations. With Japan’s focus on technology, there is significant potential for collaboration,” Edwin added.

The visiting Japanese officials praised the Dangote Refinery for its groundbreaking technological advancements and scale. Suzuki Hideo described the facility as “an astonishing masterpiece,” while Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), commended the refinery for elevating Nigeria’s status as Africa’s gateway.

“This project is a remarkable demonstration of Nigeria’s technological progress and economic ambition,” Oku said.

Similarly, Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, hailed the refinery as a “miracle” and one of the world’s wonders, emphasizing its unparalleled size and automation.

“This is the largest standalone refinery I’ve ever seen. It’s a testament to what can be achieved through vision and determination,” Tsuno stated, adding that his company is exploring collaborations with the refinery in polypropylene and other sectors.

The Dangote Petrochemical project, an integral part of the refinery complex, is set to stimulate investment in downstream industries, generate employment, increase tax revenues, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.

With its technological sophistication and export capability, the Dangote Refinery has firmly positioned Nigeria as a major player in global energy markets, while serving as a beacon of industrial excellence in Africa.
