Dan Ulasi, former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, has described President Bola Tinubu as a master strategist, warning that the PDP should not underestimate his political acumen amid a wave of defections from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ulasi’s comments come in the wake of high-profile defections, including former PDP presidential running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, both of whom have joined the APC. There are also growing reports suggesting that more PDP governors may follow suit.
Appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Ulasi stressed that the PDP needs to focus on its future and begin rebuilding its political structures at the grassroots level, rather than relying on occasional defections to maintain power. He also referenced a past statement by late former PDP National Chairman Vincent Ogbulafor, who had predicted the party would govern Nigeria for 60 years—a vision now in question.
Ulasi acknowledged Tinubu’s long-standing reputation as a political strategist, citing his resilience in overcoming attempts to remove him from power during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, despite opposition from within his own party. “Tinubu is not somebody I take for granted in any aspect of human discussion. He is a strategist,” Ulasi said.
Ulasi also criticized President Tinubu’s handling of recent security challenges, particularly in Makurdi and Plateau, questioning the president’s absence during critical moments. Despite this, he commended Tinubu’s political skills, acknowledging that his ability to navigate Nigeria’s complex political landscape should not be underestimated.
The former PDP Chairman’s comments come as the party grapples with internal divisions, including the rejection of a coalition led by former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Ulasi urged the PDP to prioritize party-building efforts from the state to the ward level to ensure its relevance in future elections.
