The embattled Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, has firmly declared that he remains in his position despite an impeachment notice signed by seventeen members.
The motion to remove Ayambem was initiated on the House floor by Effiong Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.
Ayambem, however, has denounced the process as illegitimate. In a statement released on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Matthew Okache, Ayambem claimed that the impeachment effort lacked legal standing and described the session as disrupted by Ekarika, who allegedly brought hoodlums into the chamber.
“The Cross River State House of Assembly has been alerted to false news reports that Speaker Elvert Ayambem has been impeached,” Okache stated. “To be clear, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly is, without a doubt, Elvert Ayambem. He remains in his position. What occurred earlier today, when Effiong Ekarika disrupted the session by inviting hoodlums into the chamber, is a ridiculous charade with no constitutional basis.”
Okache further emphasized that no legitimate impeachment notices had been served prior to the incident, and urged the public to disregard what he termed “fake news” about the alleged crisis. “The status quo is that Elvert Ayambem is the Speaker of the House of Assembly,” the statement concluded.
Despite the turmoil, Ayambem expressed his resolve to elevate the Assembly and support Governor Bassey Otu’s administration.
