Abuja, Nigeria – The National Industrial Court in Abuja has scheduled March 17, 2025, to deliver its ruling on a lawsuit filed by over 400 police officers who claim they were unlawfully retired from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The plaintiffs, comprising officers from Courses 18, 19, and 20 of the Police Academy, initiated the suit through eight representatives: ACP Chinedu Emengaha, ACP Victor Chilaka, ACP Egwu Otu, CSP Sylvester Ebosele, CSP Sunday Okuguni, CSP Asuquo Inyang, CSP Kalu Chikozie, and CSP Adetu Omoteso.
They contend that their forced retirement violated due process, asserting that they had not yet reached the mandatory retirement age. The suit lists the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the Force Secretary as defendants.
During the court session, the claimants’ legal counsel, Chief Goddy Uche, SAN, criticized the police authorities for allegedly demoting some of the litigants and retiring them from service while the case was still pending. He further noted the absence of legal representation from the second and third defendants in the proceedings.
Presiding over the matter, Justice R. Haastrup informed the claimants that the ruling, initially scheduled for the day, was not ready. She subsequently adjourned the case to March 17, when the court is expected to deliver its decision.
