Court Stops Niger Govt from Shutting Down Badeggi Radio

MINNA — The High Court of Justice in Niger State has issued an interim injunction restraining the state government and its agencies from taking any adverse action against Badeggi Radio Broadcasting Services Ltd.

In a ruling delivered on August 5, 2025, Justice Mohammed S.A. Mohammed granted the order in favour of the applicants — Badeggi Radio and its Managing Director, Mohammed Shuaibu Badeggi — directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The injunction specifically bars the Executive Governor of Niger State, the Niger State Urban Development Board, and other state actors from engaging in any acts that could disrupt the radio station’s operations or threaten its broadcasting licence.

The court’s order prohibits actions such as revocation, withdrawal, seizure, or demolition of the company’s premises located at the NTA Compound, Uphill Minna.

Citing key provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the National Broadcasting Commission Act, the applicants argued that their rights to operate were being unlawfully threatened.

Lead counsel to the applicants, Philip K. Emmanuel, lauded the ruling, describing it as a significant step in protecting the rights and business interests of Badeggi Radio.

Further hearing in the matter has been slated to allow for a full examination of the issues in dispute.
