Court sentence ex-Rep Speaker Farouk Lawan to 7 Years for collecting $500,000 bribe from Otedola

Former chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy, Farouk Lawan, has been sentenced to seven-year imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court found the Kano politician guilty of count one, two and three bordering on corruptly obtaining bribe of $500,000 from businessman, Femi Otedola.

Delivering judgment, Justice Angela Otaluka, the trial judge, ordered Lawan to restitute the $500,000.

Mr Lawan, while probing the multi-billion naira fuel subsidy fraud in 2012, had been accused of soliciting and collecting a $3 million bribe from Femi Otedola.

The alleged bribe was to remove Mr Otedola’s then company, Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited from the list of oil companies allegedly involved in the 2012 fuel subsidy fraud.
