Three prominent individuals have been remanded in custody following their involvement in last week’s tragic stampede at Bashorun Islamic High School in Ibadan. The Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, issued the ruling after their arraignment by the Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday.
The accused include Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, the principal of Bashorun Islamic High School; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of Agidigbo FM; and Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ile Ife.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi ordered the trio to be remanded at Agodi Correctional Centre while awaiting further legal proceedings. The individuals are facing four charges related to the deadly stampede, with the charges referencing Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The court proceedings were marked by heightened security as family members and other interested parties gathered outside the courthouse. The case continues to attract significant public attention as the Oyo State Police work on the next steps in the investigation.
This tragic incident has raised questions about safety measures at public events, and the outcome of this case is expected to shed light on accountability and prevent future tragedies.
