Court Halts Zamfara Assembly’s Move to Sack APC Lawmaker

0

The Federal High Court in Gusau has stopped the Zamfara State House of Assembly from removing Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, the APC lawmaker representing Talata Mafara South Constituency.

In a statement on Monday, the APC Publicity Secretary in Zamfara, Yusuf Idris Gusau, revealed that the court’s decision followed a lawsuit (No. FHC/GSCS/10/2025) filed by Kagara against the State Assembly, its Speaker, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), challenging his removal from office.

Justice Salim Olasupo Ibrahim, presiding over the case, granted an interim injunction barring INEC from conducting a bye-election to fill the seat. The court also ordered all parties to maintain the status quo pending further proceedings.

The case has been adjourned to March 12, 2025.

In a related development, the Zamfara Assembly has suspended nine lawmakers from various political parties, reducing its membership below the two-thirds majority needed to pass bills.
