An Osun State High Court sitting in Ilesa has issued an interim injunction restraining Governor Ademola Adeleke and other key officials from appointing Prince Clement Adesuyi or any member of the Haastrup family to the vacant stool of the Owa-Obokun of Ijesa land. This decision follows the passing of Oba Gabriel Aromolaran, who reigned for 42 years before his death on September 11.
The court order, issued by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, came in response to a suit filed by Prince Debo Adeyemi, Prince Adeboye Adewale, and other members of the Ofokutu Royal Family. The plaintiffs had sought to stop the ongoing appointment process, which included a controversial N10 million nomination fee for contestants vying for the throne.
The injunction halts any actions by the 14th (Ilesa West Local Government), 20th (Osun State Governor), 21st (Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs), and 22nd (Attorney General of Osun State) respondents concerning the presentation, nomination, or installation of a new Owa-Obokun, pending the hearing and determination of the case. This ruling effectively freezes the selection process, leaving the future of the throne of Ijesa land in legal limbo.
