Civil Society Coalition Backs Falana, Demands Immediate Removal of Rivers Sole Administrator

A coalition of civil society organisations under the umbrella of Civic Room for Rule of Law has joined the growing call for the immediate removal of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-ete Ibas, over alleged abuse of office and disregard for constitutional procedures.

The group’s position aligns with that of renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, who on Thursday urged the Federal Government to sack Ibas, citing several constitutional breaches.

Falana raised concerns over Ibas’ controversial actions, particularly the dismissal of government appointees loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The senior lawyer also referenced an official gazette from the Federal Government, which stipulates that the Sole Administrator may only act in accordance with regulations issued by the President.

According to Falana, Ibas acted beyond the scope of his mandate by removing officials without presidential approval—an action he described as unconstitutional and unlawful.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its president, Maxwell Egboh, the Civic Room for Rule of Law condemned Ibas’ conduct, accusing him of flouting the law and undermining presidential authority.

“The Sole Administrator’s arbitrary decisions have created an atmosphere of uncertainty and tension in the governance of Rivers State,” the statement read. “These actions are a direct violation of the President’s directive and must not be allowed to stand.”

The coalition called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act swiftly by removing Ibas and restoring lawful order in the administration of Rivers State.

They also commended the Ad-Hoc Committee of the House of Representatives investigating the crisis in the state, and urged lawmakers to conduct a thorough probe into Ibas’ activities.

The controversy surrounding the Sole Administrator’s conduct continues to generate nationwide reactions, as many stakeholders call for adherence to constitutional processes and respect for the rule of law.
