The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, disclosed this development in a statement on Saturday, confirming that his client is prepared to face trial, maintaining his confidence in his innocence.
According to Ejimakor, the legal team received two official letters before their routine visitation to Kanu. One letter came from the Chief Justice of Nigeria, responding to their request for administrative intervention in reassigning the case following the previous judge’s recusal. The second letter, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, confirmed the case’s reassignment.
Kanu expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for swiftly addressing the matter and acknowledged public support for his right to a fair trial.
Ejimakor emphasized that while Kanu has always been ready for trial, the legal uncertainties since September 2024—when the former judge stepped down—posed significant risks to his constitutional rights.
“With the authorities now taking the necessary steps to ensure due process, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will focus on preparing his defense,” the statement read.
