CharlyBoy Leads National Campaign to Tackle Prostate Cancer

Foremost Nigerian entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as CharlyBoy, has launched a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about prostate cancer, encouraging regular screening and early treatment among Nigerian men.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, CharlyBoy, who recently survived prostate cancer, said the initiative is spearheaded by the CharlyBoy Foundation — a nonprofit dedicated to promoting men’s health, with a focus on mental well-being, diabetes, and prostate care.

“We are facing a silent epidemic. Too many men are dying in silence because they don’t speak about their health challenges, especially prostate issues,” he said.

The campaign features mobile screening outreaches in rural areas, public awareness events, and partnerships with diagnostic laboratories to bring free or subsidized testing closer to communities. So far, over 500 men have benefitted from the free screenings.

CharlyBoy, fondly called the “Area Fada,” said the effort is inspired by his personal journey battling prostate cancer, adding that he hopes sharing his experience will break the stigma and encourage men to take their health seriously.

“In the twilight of my life, this is my mission — to educate, create awareness, and drag men out of their cocoons. Health is wealth, but poverty and stigma are keeping our men from seeking help early,” he said.

The Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Doris Udenzi-Davis, revealed that they are funding screenings entirely from internal resources, but emphasized the need for broader support.

“We are funding the tests 100 percent, but we need donations and volunteers. Our goal is to cover every state in Nigeria and ensure men have access to timely diagnosis and care,” she said.

Dr. Udenzi-Davis called on government agencies, private sector players, and individuals—both at home and in the diaspora—to partner with the foundation to expand the initiative’s reach.

Beyond screenings, the Foundation is also building support systems through social media platforms, podcasts, and local community engagements.

“This isn’t just about money—it’s about saving lives. We urge Nigerians to join us, whether through donations, supplies like catheters, or volunteering. Together, we can change the narrative around men’s health in Nigeria,” she added.
