Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League, following their 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher discussed Chelsea’s recent form, labeling the draw as a “massive blow” to their Champions League aspirations. He explained that Chelsea’s difficult run-in, which includes matches against Liverpool, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest, makes their task of securing a top-five finish even more challenging.
“I don’t see them making the Champions League,” Carragher remarked. “It’s not just the two points they miss out on, but this is the kind of fixture you look at on paper and think, ‘that’s a guaranteed three points,’ yet Chelsea now faces a series of tough matches that will make it hard to catch up.”
The result saw Newcastle United leapfrog Chelsea into fourth place after their dominant 4-1 win over Manchester United, enhancing their own hopes of securing Champions League qualification.
As it stands, the fifth-place team in the Premier League will earn a spot in next season’s Champions League, but Carragher remains unconvinced that Chelsea will be able to make up the ground required.
