OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially requested the dissolution of Parliament, paving the way for a federal election set for April 28.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Carney emphasized the need for Canada to strengthen its economy and address trade challenges, particularly tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election on April 28,” Carney wrote. “We need to build the strongest economy in the G7. We need to address President Trump’s tariffs. Canadians deserve a choice about who should lead that effort for our country.”
Carney assumed office as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party following the resignation of Justin Trudeau in January. Trudeau stepped down amid declining poll numbers and internal party dissent.
The upcoming election is expected to shape Canada’s economic and diplomatic trajectory, with Carney positioning himself as the leader to drive economic growth and stability.
