President Bola Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. after a prolonged illness.
In a show of national respect, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late statesman’s remains back to Nigeria.
Tinubu, who personally spoke with Buhari’s widow, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, extended his heartfelt condolences and praised the late leader’s service to the nation. He also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the former president.
Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Major General, was elected Nigeria’s civilian president in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. He had previously served as the country’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the nation and beyond. Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described the news as “shocking and devastating,” while WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala called it “unbelievable.” Former Minister Femi Fani-Kayode referred to Buhari as a “proud Nigerian son.”
Further updates are expected as the nation begins formal mourning and preparations for his return and burial.
