Borno Assembly Backs Tinubu, Zulum Amid Fresh Boko Haram Onslaught

The Borno State House of Assembly has passed a unanimous vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima over the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope” initiative, even as it raised alarm over a disturbing resurgence of Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks across parts of the state.

The endorsement came during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, following a motion sponsored by Hon. Engr. Mohammed Gambomi Marte, member representing Marte Constituency. The motion, titled “The Need to Address the Resurgence of Boko Haram and ISWAP Terrorists in Borno State,” was co-sponsored by several lawmakers and received unanimous support.

Lawmakers expressed grave concern that despite years of relative peace, several communities are once again under threat, with Guzamala and Abadam LGAs reportedly still under full insurgent control and lacking any form of civil authority. Areas such as Monguno, Damboa, Bama, Gwoza, Chibok, Kala Balge, and parts of Ngala and Kukawa have also witnessed fresh waves of attacks, resulting in the deaths of both civilians and security personnel.

Members representing the affected areas lamented that the resurgence has shattered the hopes of residents who had begun to rebuild their lives, with attacks reported in communities like Wulgo, Sabon Gari, Izge, Ngoshe, Tarfa, and Kautikari. They warned that the situation, if unchecked, could undermine the Renewed Hope agenda and ongoing peacebuilding efforts.

In response, the House expressed full confidence in the efforts of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima to address the security situation, while also pledging unwavering support for Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s 10-point agenda aimed at restoring peace and stability in the state.

The Assembly urged the Federal Government to deploy more troops and equipment to the region, strengthen coordination among security agencies, and establish a military brigade in Guzamala. It also called for increased intelligence-sharing, community policing, and the rehabilitation of key road networks linking affected communities.

Speaker Lawan emphasized the importance of involving traditional and religious leaders in community engagement and prayer, while appealing to humanitarian agencies such as NEMA and SEMA to scale up emergency response for displaced persons.

He described the situation as a critical test of national resolve, stressing that with a unified approach between federal, state, and community stakeholders, the tide of terrorism can be reversed and Borno’s status as the “Home of Peace” fully restored.
