The Borno State Internal Revenue Service (BOIRS) has achieved a historic revenue milestone, generating N28.3 billion in 2024—an impressive 46% increase over its initial target of N19.3 billion.
Speaking at a press briefing in Maiduguri, BOIRS Executive Chairman, Prof. Bello Alhaji Ibrahim, credited the success to strategic reforms, including strong support from Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, extensive public sensitization, digitization of tax collection, and a harmonized tax system that eliminated redundant levies on businesses.
Prof. Ibrahim acknowledged the cooperation of Borno residents and highlighted key reforms such as a gradual payment system and an enhanced invoicing mechanism that boosted transparency and accountability.
However, the agency faced hurdles, including resistance from local governments to the tax harmonization policy, disruptions caused by flood disasters, and reduced contributions from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Looking ahead, BOIRS has set an ambitious revenue target of N35 billion for 2025, surpassing the state government’s N25 billion projection. Prof. Ibrahim assured taxpayers that no additional burden would be imposed, emphasizing that all funds collected would be channeled into development projects to improve the lives of Borno residents.
