Bode George Warns Tinubu: ‘Nigeria’s Democracy at Risk’

0

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against allowing undemocratic forces to derail Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country is becoming an international embarrassment due to deepening political crises.

In an open letter titled “From Osun to Lagos and Rivers: Darkness Looms,” George criticized recent political developments, particularly the Osun State council crisis, which led to violence and loss of lives. He condemned the alleged legal manipulations that escalated the situation, calling them “illogical and heartless.”

Lagos Crisis: ‘A Show of Shame’

George also addressed the Lagos State political turmoil, describing the impeachment and subsequent reinstatement of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa as an international disgrace.

“Thirty-six out of 40 lawmakers impeached Obasa on January 13, yet forces within the system turned the Assembly into a battlefield. His return as Speaker is shocking, and the joke is on the presidency,” he stated.

He criticized external interference in Lagos politics, questioning why Nigeria’s democracy should be subjected to global ridicule.

Rivers State: Economic and Political Instability

Expressing concern over the Rivers State crisis, George described a recent court ruling affecting governance and federal allocations as unfair to the people.

“What kind of judgment plunges citizens into extreme misery—no federal allocation, no salaries, no infrastructure, no food, and no hope?” he asked.

He warned that the escalating crisis could push aggrieved groups to sabotage oil pipelines, a move that could severely impact Nigeria’s revenue.

Call for Urgent Action

George urged Tinubu and All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders to reassess their approach to governance, citing worsening electoral irregularities, insecurity, and political instability.

He pointed to vote-buying in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections as further evidence of a failing system and lamented that terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping are on the rise while the government remains preoccupied with power struggles.

“Instead of addressing these crises, APC members are busy sowing discord nationwide. It’s time to say enough is enough.”

He warned that destabilizing Lagos and Rivers—two of Nigeria’s largest electoral states— could have serious consequences for the nation’s future.

A Final Appeal to Tinubu

Concluding his letter, George urged the government to restore order before it is too late, reminding leaders that “goodness is an investment that never fails.”

He warned that every action in governance carries consequences, urging those in power to act in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy and its citizens.
