Former Senate President, David Mark, has strongly condemned the deadly attacks that rocked communities in Otukpo and Ado Local Government Areas of Benue State on Tuesday night, describing the incident as a coordinated massacre that demands urgent security intervention.
No fewer than 15 people were killed in the assaults, which took place in Otobi-Akpa and Emichi communities of Otukpo LGA, and Utonkon in Ado LGA, after gunmen stormed the areas, unleashing mayhem on unsuspecting residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, the former Senate President called on security agencies to immediately swing into action, stating that the attacks were no longer isolated incidents but rather a “premeditated onslaught” against innocent citizens.
“This is no longer a random occurrence,” Mark stated. “It appears to be an organised, premeditated onslaught. We cannot continue to sit back and watch our people slaughtered for no reason.”
He emphasized the urgency of forming community vigilance groups to assist in protecting lives and property, urging residents to be security-conscious while maintaining peaceful coexistence.
“While Benue people are known for their hospitality, it is critical to differentiate between genuine residents and those with sinister motives,” he added.
David Mark extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed. He also called on residents to stay calm and cooperate fully with security operatives working to restore peace and stability in the region.
The statement follows a previous warning he issued on April 7, cautioning against reprisal attacks after similar violent incidents in the state.
Mark’s renewed call underscores growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in parts of Benue State and the urgent need for both state and federal authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives.
