The High Court of Bayelsa State, sitting in Yenagoa, has issued an interim order restraining associates of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from holding a planned mega rally in the state.
The proposed political gathering, scheduled to take place in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, on April 12, 2025, has now been put on hold pending further court proceedings.
Justice I.A. Uzakah granted the interim injunction on Thursday, April 3, following a Motion Ex-Parte filed by the Attorney General of Bayelsa State, Mr. Biriyai Dambo (SAN), in Suit No. BYHC/YHC/CV/133/2025.
The suit names the lead convener of the NEW Associates, Mr. George Turnah, and Minister Nyesom Wike as the first and second defendants respectively. Also joined in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police.
The enrolled order restrains the defendants — and anyone acting on their behalf — from conducting or facilitating any form of political assembly, rally, meeting, or gathering in solidarity with or in celebration of the FCT Minister within Bayelsa State, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for Interlocutory Injunction.
The court has adjourned the matter to April 11, 2025, for further hearing.
