Bauchi Police Urge Protest Organisers to Postpone ‘Take It Back’ Rally Over Security Concerns

The Bauchi State Police Command has raised concerns over the planned nationwide protest by the “Take It Back Movement,” calling on organisers to postpone the rally scheduled for Monday.

The protest, which coincides with the National Police Day—a day set aside to honour the service and sacrifice of Nigeria’s police personnel—has been described by the command as ill-timed and potentially unpatriotic.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Wakil, acknowledged citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly but questioned the intent behind holding a protest on a day dedicated to celebrating the resilience and dedication of law enforcement officers.

“The timing and lack of proper communication with security agencies raise serious concerns,” Wakil said. “Organisers did not submit any formal notification nor request security coverage for the event.”

As a result, the command has strongly advised a postponement of the protest, citing heightened security concerns and the need to safeguard public order.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed all Area Commanders, Tactical Teams, and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to ramp up visibility patrols, particularly around known flashpoints in the state.

While reiterating the command’s commitment to upholding human rights and lawful expression, the police encouraged the protest organisers to follow due process by submitting a detailed plan indicating the date, time, and location of the intended demonstration.

“Without these formalities, organisers may be held accountable for any disruptions that may arise,” Wakil warned.

The command also called on parents and guardians to discourage youths from participating in any activities that could destabilise the peace currently enjoyed across the state.

Residents were urged to remain law-abiding, continue their daily activities without fear, and promptly report any suspicious movement to the nearest police station, via the Police Rescue Me App, or through the emergency lines 08151849417 and 09053872273.
