Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that he would back former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, if he emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
El-Rufai made this known on Thursday while responding to a question posed by an X (formerly Twitter) user who asked whether he would support Obi if he becomes the ADC’s flag bearer.
In his response, the younger El-Rufai replied affirmatively, stating that Obi might be the nation’s best hope of being rescued from what he described as “urban bandits” operating within the corridors of power.
“An emphatic yes. He may save us from these urban bandits in the Presidential Villa,” El-Rufai posted.
His remarks come amid rising political speculation about potential opposition alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Earlier, Bashir had commented on the political strength of Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, describing his grassroots support and cult-like followership as a significant challenge to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He argued that the 2019 general election was likely Atiku’s strongest opportunity to win the presidency, hinting that the dynamics have since shifted in favour of more disruptive candidates like Obi.
Peter Obi has yet to officially declare for the ADC or any other party for the upcoming election, but talks of a broader opposition coalition continue to dominate Nigeria’s political discourse.
