Bashir El-Rufai Calls for Support for SDP, Criticizes Tinubu’s Appointments

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has urged Nigerians to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to, in his words, “save the country from area boys.”

In a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Bashir appeared to take a swipe at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly his appointees from Lagos State.

His comments come amid his father’s recent defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP. Nasir El-Rufai, who previously served as Kaduna’s governor, has been vocal in his criticism of the APC-led government, citing a disconnect between his values and the party’s current direction.

El-Rufai had earlier accused President Tinubu of appointing only his close associates, primarily from Lagos, rather than ensuring broad regional representation.

“The president’s appointments are not being made because the appointees are Yoruba, but because they are his own boys, and most of the appointments do not even reasonably cover the South-West,” he stated.

His defection and his son’s remarks signal growing political realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
