In a disturbing development, armed bandits have reportedly imposed a N60 million levy on twelve communities in Zamfara State, accusing them of aiding recent military operations in the region.
The affected communities, according to conflict and crisis journalist Bakatsine, include Koloma, Dan Hayin Zargado, Zargado, Dan Godabe, Sabuwar Tunga, Makini, Bubaka, Yelwa, Bahwada, Koda, Manya, and Kabusu.
The information was made public in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where the journalist revealed that the bandits threatened violent attacks if the residents fail to comply with the demand.
“Bandits have imposed a N60m levy on 12 Zamfara communities for allegedly aiding military raids. Residents fear attacks if they don’t pay,” the post read.
The development has heightened tension in the affected areas, as locals now live in fear of reprisals. Community leaders are reportedly scrambling for solutions amidst limited security presence and growing insecurity in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria’s northwest.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
