The Arewa Youth Alliance for Progress and Development (AYAPD) has called for an urgent investigation into alleged human rights violations by a private security firm tasked with monitoring pipelines in the Niger Delta.
At a press conference yesterday, AYAPD’s leader, Ambassador Umar Babayaro, raised concerns over reported cases of unlawful arrests and mistreatment of local residents by the security company. The group claims to have received multiple complaints from youths in the region, detailing incidents of arbitrary detention and abuse.
According to Babayaro, the firm identified as Tantita Security Services has been detaining individuals without due process, in violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He cited specific cases, including the alleged illegal detention of Moses Richard from Shekri, Peter, Boma Samuel, and Jolomi Abechukwu from Tisin Community, who was arrested alongside his friend Bade.
“We are bringing this anomaly to the attention of the federal government and calling on international organisations to help protect the rights of Nigerian youths,” Babayaro stated.
The AYAPD is urging both the government and global human rights bodies to conduct a thorough probe into the security firm’s activities, ensuring justice for affected individuals and safeguarding the rights of Nigerians in the region.
