Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is yet to officially complete his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a close associate has confirmed.
The delay, according to the source who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity, is intentional and tied to Atiku’s travel schedule and strategic considerations.
“Atiku returned to Nigeria briefly for the burial of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, after a business trip abroad. From Daura, he proceeded overseas again for a planned two-week break,” the source disclosed.
The insider noted that a formal declaration into a new party, particularly for a political figure of Atiku’s stature, carries symbolic weight and must be done in person.
“For someone as high-profile as His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, it’s important that Nigerians see him physically picking up his membership card and completing the formalities. It sends a strong message,” the source explained.
The former Vice President’s expected entry into the ADC is widely seen as a potential game-changer ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political analysts closely watching for its implications on opposition unity and realignment.
While the exact date of the formal registration remains under wraps, sources say it is being carefully timed for maximum political and media impact upon his return.
“Atiku understands the weight of this move, and he’s preparing to make a strong statement when the time comes,” the source added.
His anticipated entry into the ADC is expected to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, setting the stage for intensified opposition activity in the buildup to the 2027 elections.
