Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting that he plans to leave the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku reassured party members, particularly women from the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), that he remains committed to the PDP and its future success.
During a visit from the women members of the BoT, led by former Minister of Women Affairs Hajia Inna Ciroma, Atiku emphasized the critical need for a coalition to challenge the APC-led government in the 2027 elections. He described the coalition movement as not just a political strategy, but a necessity for rebuilding Nigeria and offering a viable alternative to the ruling party.
Atiku spoke passionately about the PDP’s future, highlighting historical examples such as the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) forming a successful coalition with the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) during the Second Republic. He assured the women that despite the coalition’s broad nature, the PDP’s name and identity would remain intact.
In a statement to Vanguard, Ciroma revealed that the visit aimed to address the ongoing crisis within the party. She shared concerns over the lack of leadership and direction, emphasizing that any organization without strong leadership is bound to falter. The women’s delegation made it clear that they would not stand idly by while the party faces such challenges.
Ciroma confirmed that Atiku was committed to revitalizing the PDP and had already begun discussions with political leaders across regions to ensure a united front. The visit also included talks about the importance of party funding to ensure long-term independence and sustainability, free from individual control.
Atiku’s message was clear: he remains dedicated to the PDP’s revival and is fully invested in building a broad-based coalition to reclaim and rebuild Nigeria.
