ABUJA — The Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has floated the possibility of a joint Atiku-Obi presidential ticket in 2027, saying such an alliance could be the game-changer needed to end the rule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Tuesday, Olarewaju argued that combining the political strength of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi — both of whom secured a combined 13 million votes in the last election — would pose a formidable challenge to the APC.
“That is a possibility — Atiku-Obi on the same ticket. The only thing we can rule out are those things that are constitutionally impossible, like Atiku running as Vice President again,” Olarewaju said.
He explained that both leaders are currently aligned under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and are “working within the same political family” to build a broad-based opposition ahead of 2027.
“It’s not about personal ambition. Atiku and Obi are great patriots of this country. If they have to sacrifice to stay on the same page and pull forces together, then they must forge a clear political arrangement that all Nigerians can see,” he added.
Citing the 2023 presidential election results, Olarewaju stressed: “Atiku pulled 6.98 million votes, Obi got 6.1 million. If we can have those two votes together, that would be the first step towards getting rid of APC government.”
The remarks come amid growing speculation of a grand opposition coalition designed to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
