Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has signaled his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, pledging to launch an aggressive fight against corruption if elected.
Speaking in Hausa during an address to supporters, Atiku made a strong vow to hold corrupt individuals accountable. In a video circulating on social media platform X, he declared: “I swear to God, if elected, whoever steals or engages in any corruption-related activities, we will declare war against them and they must be punished.”
Atiku, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is believed to have aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led opposition coalition. Though he has not formally announced his defection from the PDP, his recent activities suggest a growing influence within the emerging alliance.
The coalition recently unveiled its interim leadership, naming former Senate President David Mark as Interim National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as Interim National Secretary, among other key appointments.
Atiku’s renewed political ambition and strong anti-corruption message appear to be setting the tone for what may become a highly competitive 2027 race.
