Atiku Condemns Arrest of Dele Farotimi, Calls for Immediate Release

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has denounced the arrest and detention of lawyer and human rights advocate Dele Farotimi, describing it as an attempt by the Tinubu administration to suppress fundamental rights and stifle free expression.

In a statement released on Monday, Atiku likened Farotimi’s arrest to the repressive practices of military rule, warning against the use of state power to silence dissent. He criticized the involvement of law enforcement in what he described as a civil defamation matter, calling it an overreach.

“The arrest and detention of Dele Farotimi serve as a grim reminder of the dark days of military dictatorship when tyranny sought to crush all dissent,” Atiku said. “Defamation is not a criminal offense that warrants law enforcement intervention. This is akin to using a sledgehammer to swat a fly.”

Atiku accused the administration of pursuing an agenda to intimidate critics and erode democratic principles. He warned that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and lead to authoritarian governance.

“The recent arrest of Dele Farotimi underscores a troubling trend by this administration to intimidate citizens and suppress opposing voices. Such actions contradict the principles of democracy and pave the way for authoritarian rule,” Atiku added.

Citing his own experience in addressing defamation claims, Atiku pointed out that in 2019, he pursued legal redress in court rather than involving law enforcement. He emphasized that freedom of speech and association are constitutional rights, not privileges.

“If anyone feels wronged by defamatory words, the courts are the appropriate venue for resolution, not the Police,” he said.

The former Vice President called for Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release while urging the government to desist from using law enforcement agencies to target critics.

Farotimi, known for his outspoken criticism of the government, was reportedly arrested on defamation charges, sparking outrage among activists, civil society groups, and opposition leaders. Many view the arrest as part of a broader effort to crack down on dissent in the country.

Atiku’s statement joins a growing chorus of criticisms against the administration’s perceived disregard for democratic norms and human rights.
