Over 200 Feared Dead in “Senseless” Attacks on Rural Communities
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent wave of killings in Benue State, where coordinated attacks on rural communities reportedly claimed the lives of over 200 people.
In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku described the assaults as “senseless” and a grim reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis. He called for urgent and decisive measures to address the escalating violence.
“This assault on innocent Nigerians is not just a local tragedy; it is a national emergency that requires urgent, decisive action,” he said.
Atiku urged both the Federal Government and the Benue State Government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the attacks, ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, and strengthen security operations to prevent further bloodshed.
He emphasized the need for better-equipped security personnel, enhanced intelligence gathering, and proactive community protection, particularly in vulnerable rural areas that are often the target of violence.
The former Vice President also called for immediate humanitarian intervention to support survivors, including access to medical care, trauma counselling, and assistance in rebuilding their lives.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and communities. No words can capture the depth of pain experienced by those who have lost loved ones, homes, and peace of mind,” he said.
Atiku appealed to Nigerians to unite across ethnic and religious lines and demand accountability from authorities while working collectively towards sustainable peace.
“Let us stand together as a nation in condemning these atrocities. May God console the bereaved, heal our wounded land, and restore peace to our communities,” he added.
The attacks have sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for the government to take more decisive steps in tackling insecurity, particularly in rural regions plagued by banditry and communal violence.
