ASUU Yobe University Chapter Maintains Strike, Cites Unmet Demands

The Yobe State University (YSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it is continuing its indefinite strike action, which commenced on July 11, citing unmet demands from the state government.

In a statement issued on Monday in Damaturu, the chapter chairman, Dr. Ahmed Karage, clarified that despite the recent implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage consequential adjustment, other critical issues raised by the union remain unresolved.

According to Dr. Karage, the outstanding demands include the implementation of academic staff promotions approved by the university’s governing council, as well as the payment of promotion arrears dating back to 2018.

He also listed the non-payment of arrears related to minimum wage consequential adjustments from 2019 to 2024, and the 35–25 percent salary award for professors and other academic ranks covering the period from 2023 to 2025. Additionally, the union is demanding the payment of outstanding arrears of the N70,000 minimum wage from January 2024 to June 2025.

Dr. Karage appealed to the public for understanding and support, assuring that the union remains committed to resolving the issues amicably.

“The strike will only be suspended once a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between ASUU and the Yobe State Government,” he stated.

The union urged the government to expedite action on addressing their demands in order to restore academic activities at the institution.
