ASUU Elects Prof. Piwuna as New President

0

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new national president.

Prof. Piwuna, who currently serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The election took place during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State. Sources familiar with the proceedings confirmed that the contest was between Prof. Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

His emergence comes at a tense period for the union, with rising speculations of a potential nationwide strike. Concerns have been mounting over the recent disbursement of Earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government, ongoing brain drain in the academic sector, and unresolved funding issues in Nigerian universities.

More details are expected to follow as Prof. Piwuna formally assumes office.
