BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Police in Argentina raided the wrong location on Wednesday in a high-profile investigation into the death of football legend Diego Maradona, only to discover that the targeted medical company had relocated years ago.
The operation was aimed at Medidom, the firm previously responsible for Maradona’s home care when he died in November 2020 at the age of 60. Authorities are seeking evidence for the ongoing trial of seven medical professionals accused of mishandling his treatment during his final days.
According to a police source cited by AFP, officers arrived at Medidom’s former office in Buenos Aires and found it vacated. A new raid is now being planned at the company’s current location.
This marks the second raid in connection with the case, following an earlier search of the Olivos Clinic, where Maradona underwent brain surgery just weeks before his death.
Prosecutors have described the late football icon’s final days as a “horror theater,” alleging he received substandard care in an unsanitary room with inadequate medical support at his home in Tigre, a suburb of Buenos Aires.
Maradona died from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, just two weeks after undergoing surgery for a blood clot on the brain. His long battle with drug and alcohol addiction had also taken a toll on his health.
The seven members of his medical team — including doctors, nurses, and a psychiatrist — are on trial in San Isidro. If convicted of “homicide with possible intent,” they could face between 8 and 25 years in prison for allegedly continuing a course of treatment they knew could lead to death.
The trial began on March 11 and is expected to continue until July.
