The Arewa Youth Movement has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to select a Northern Christian as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, stressing that such a move would foster national unity and boost his electoral prospects.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the group’s leaders, led by National President Ambassador Muhammed Sa’ad Aboki, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and religious balance in the country’s political landscape.
According to Aboki, selecting a Northern Christian would address criticisms of religious imbalance that trailed the 2023 elections and strengthen Tinubu’s appeal across crucial regions, particularly the Middle Belt and northern states with significant Christian populations.
“Among the most discussed prospects is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose potential re-election bid could reshape the political landscape once more,” Aboki said. “His ability to mobilize political support, manage alliances, and command loyalty within the APC makes him a formidable contender.”
He further noted that a Northern Christian vice-presidential candidate would send a strong message of unity, inclusiveness, and sensitivity to Nigeria’s diverse religious composition.
The group pointed out that in the 2023 elections, Tinubu lost key states such as the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Plateau — areas with a large Northern Christian demographic — highlighting the need for broader representation.
“Choosing a Christian Vice Presidential candidate from Northern Nigeria would not only help address the imbalance of the 2023 ticket but also strengthen Tinubu’s chances of securing a broad-based mandate,” the group added. “This move could be seen as a corrective measure and a gesture of goodwill in response to past criticisms.”
The Arewa Youth Movement emphasized that fostering inclusivity would be vital in securing widespread support and ensuring a more united Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
