Appeal Court Affirms Okpebholo’s Victory as Edo Governor, Dismisses PDP’s Petition

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday upheld the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Governor of Edo State, affirming the validity of the electoral process conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Mohammed Danjuma ruled that the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, lacked merit and was therefore dismissed in its entirety.

According to Justice Danjuma, the appellants failed to prove that any miscarriage of justice occurred in the judgment delivered by the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, which had earlier thrown out their petition.

The appellate court held that the PDP and Ighodalo were unable to provide substantial evidence to challenge the legitimacy of the September 24, 2024, gubernatorial election or dispute the declaration of Okpebholo as winner by INEC.

The unanimous decision was delivered by a three-man panel of Justices of the Court of Appeal, bringing a decisive end to the legal battle over the Edo governorship contest.
