The Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Governor Bala Mohammed to reconsider his opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, describing the reforms as a pivotal move toward boosting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring equitable resource distribution among states.
At a press conference in Bauchi, the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Adamu Aliyu Jallah, highlighted the significance of the Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly. According to Jallah, these bills, if enacted, would bolster revenue generation, enhance economic productivity, and position Nigeria for long-term sustainable growth.
“For Nigeria to compete favorably with other developing nations, it must adopt progressive taxation policies,” Jallah emphasized. “Tax reform is a globally recognized strategy for improving government revenue and addressing citizens’ needs. Rather than outright criticism, the governor should have carefully reviewed the bills and engaged constructively with relevant authorities to address any concerns.”
In addition to urging Governor Mohammed to rethink his stance on the reforms, the APC leveled serious allegations against the governor, accusing him of mismanaging federal funds allocated to Bauchi State. Jallah alleged that despite receiving over ₦144 billion in Federation Account Allocations, as well as other statutory funds and palliatives under the Tinubu administration, there is little evidence of meaningful development projects in the state.
“Let the governor account for all the funds received during this administration,” Jallah demanded. He noted that the lack of visible progress has raised significant questions about transparency and financial accountability in Bauchi State.
The APC also took aim at Governor Mohammed’s privatization agenda, accusing his administration of using it as a tool to enrich close associates rather than benefiting the people of Bauchi State.
“The government announced plans to privatize certain companies, citing the need for productivity and efficiency. Yet, instead of revitalizing these entities to create jobs and generate revenue, they have been handed over to the governor’s allies,” Jallah claimed. He further alleged that public workers in the state have been left to bear the brunt of these policies, with some unpaid for as long as three years, while others face delays in salary payments.
Concluding his address, Jallah urged Governor Mohammed to redirect his focus toward addressing pressing issues in Bauchi State. These include resolving the lingering salary crisis and prioritizing accountability in governance to ensure the equitable use of public funds.
“The people of Bauchi deserve leadership that prioritizes their welfare and development,” Jallah said.
The APC’s remarks come amid ongoing debates surrounding the Tax Reform Bills and their potential impact on Nigeria’s economic trajectory.
